Why You Should #ThankAPharmacist This Month
October is American Pharmacist Month, and like many other members of our healthcare system, they deserve extra praise and thanks this year for their dedication in serving our communities throughout the pandemic. Here are just a few reasons why you should thank a pharmacist this month.
4 Reasons to Thank A Pharmacist in October
1. Pharmacists Do More Than You Think
You know they fill your prescriptions and administer vaccines, but did you know they can provide additional services? Pharmacists and are wealth of information and spend a lot of time focusing on patient and healthcare provider education. Most pharmacies offer medication therapy management, or medication consultations. The pharmacist will sit down with you to review all of your medications and evaluate for drug interactions, appropriate dosing, monitoring, side effects, proper use, and more.
Pharmacies are responsible for the dissemination of public health information and help keep their communities informed of important health crises and current recommendations.
2. Pharmacists Have Administered 133 Million COVID Vaccines in 2021
The federal retail pharmacy program is a collaboration between the federal government and states, and 21 national pharmacy partners. It was enacted to increase access to COVID-19 vaccination across the United States. This pharmacy network was key to the vaccine rollout. As of mid-September, nearly 133 millions doses had been administered from 41,000 locations, helping to dramatically reduce the spread of COVID-19.
3. When you can’t reach your doctor, you can reach a pharmacist
Doctors can be hard to reach because they typically have a nurse line, or an online communication tool for simple but urgent questions. What do you do when you forgot to ask all your questions about medications while you were at the doctor’s office? Ask your pharmacist! Pharmacists can answer most questions about your prescriptions and over the counter medication. They are eager to help and share their knowledge. Pharmacists are often overlooked as a member of your healthcare team, but they are likely the most accessible member with the information you need, when you need it. Pharmacists are positioned to make a significant impact on their communities, and are always happy to do so!
4. Pharmacists are Close by
Those that live in rural areas often struggle with access to doctors and specialists, but even in the most remote communities a pharmacy can be found. Fortunately 91% of Americans live within 5 miles of a pharmacy. These facilities are crucial to the healthcare and connection of the communities they serve, with pharmacists that are dedicated to their populous.
